Emotional Support. Spiritual Development. Social Interaction. Physical health and wellbeing. Self-esteem building. Creating healthy habits and lifestyle.
Recovery Skills. Our Outpatient Treatment Center offers both day and evening classes. It included many tears. It included laughter. It meant I had to learn how to trust and be vulnerable again. Snack time. My least favorite time.
We would sit around a table and eat a healthy snack. We learned to eat to feel good, learned that food affects us on every level. It was healing because I lost my preconceived ideas about dieting, and painful because my social anxiety and introverted-ness frequently got in the way of connection.
Pleasure building. My second least favorite time. Also needs a new name… We played games. We learned how to laugh at ourselves and each other. We learned to make mistakes and be OK with it. We learned to take risks. It was painfully healing for my perfectionist side and also healing to notice how to create fun, positive relationships again with people who knew a whole lot about me. Once a week we would do yoga or something movement-related with a specialist.
Here I learned yoga could change my life. I learned the emotional freedom technique EFT and practiced it with her individually. I worked through a trauma by using EFT. I started doing yoga outside of the IOP. I found a yoga community and now some of my closest friends.
I found connection with my body that I had been removed from for my 30 years here in this world. So many tears. So many panic attacks. I do believe trauma is stored in the body, and through movement we can heal. Sensorimotor therapy. A body-centered therapy. If during processing time I felt the fight-or-flight urge, I would tighten and relax my legs to move the energy through my body.
Depending on your needs, you may be referred to additional comprehensive mental health treatment, or training in how to increase healthy life skills, or employment counseling. Of course our professional staff remains available and ready to assist you at any time in your treatment.
Your important initial clinical assessment will determine your suitability for the IOP treatment program. In some situations, detox may be required. If medically-supervised detox is required, you will learn the specifics of that requirement for your custom treatment plan, and you will be referred to available professional detox services that are a fit for your situation, prior to starting the IOP program. You will also receive important, helpful counseling about your needs and treatment options as part of your assessment.
At an inpatient treatment facility, you live in a residence area, usually a shared dorm room, under the rules and governance of the operators of the center. Each treatment center is unique with its own set of requirements, but you generally give up control of your day to day life while in treatment.
Travel is sometimes required for inpatient treatment, and sometimes travel is desired. For example, some people choose to go to Florida for inpatient rehab, and live in a treatment facility for the duration of their rehab. For the typical rehab experience lasting 30 days, this can mean a significant time away from work, family, and personal obligations. You remain in control of your own life. You can still go to work or get a job, and begin rebuilding your personal life, with the help and support you receive from the program.
You are responsible for participating in the treatment programs at the local Counseling Center, according to your scheduled treatment plan. In the Intensive Outpatient Program, you continue your life with support from the local clinical, emotional and peer support systems provided by the IOP.
